CLEAN-UP

Clean-up and personal hygiene are important while camping. It is very often the point of arguments between the Scouts. The patrol leader should have a duty roster prearranged for the campout, but this is not always the case.
  1. We use the three washbasin method of cleanup. The first basin has warm soapy water, the second has cool clean water for rinsing, and the third has warm water with bleach for sterilization.
  2. Personal dishes are done before cooking pots and pans.
  3. Dishes must be cleaned of food and excess liquids prior to washing. This ensures the water remains as clean as possible for as long as possible.
  4. Excess food is burned in the campfiore, if possible. If there is no campfire, it should be packed out. Grease is only put into a grease pit.
  5. Each Scout should do clean-up at least once a day.
  6. Dishwater is dumped in a great pit duge for that purpose (200' from water and camp).
  7. If no established latrine is available, then each person should dig a small cathole (6"-8" deep and 200' from camp and any water). The cathole should be covered when finished. Leave a couple of rocks on top of it so other Scouts know it is a cathole.
  8. Leave no trash. Period. If a Scout drops trash, he is expected to pick it up. We also do a clean sweep of the campsite before leaving, and pack out any and all trash.
