NISQUALLY WILDLIFE REFUGE - 08.0331

Requirement 7 of the Bird Study badge states:

Do ONE of the following:

a. Go on a field trip with a local club or with others who are knowledgeable about birds in your area.
1. Keep a list or fill out a checklist of all the birds your group observed during the field trip.
2. Tell your counselor which birds your group saw and why some species were common and some were present in small numbers.
3. Tell your counselor what makes the area you visited good for finding birds.

We recently visited Nisqually Wildlife Refuge where National Parks Volunteer Birder Jan S took us on a tour. Afterward, we completed the Brown Farm Trail, where we viewed and sketched various species.

Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge is just off of Exit 114 on the I-5, near Lacey, WA. The trail is handicapped-accessible, with wooden planks for the 1.5+ mile loop, and packed gravel over earthen berms for the longer 5.5+ mile loop. As is typical for Washington, we experienced weather from beautiful sunshine to pea-sized hail, sleet, and heavy freezing rain -- within the same half-hour. Dress in layers, and bring your rain gear if Zac is coming with you.
