Second class requirement 1b requires a 5-mile hike using a map and compass. David set up the hike, and he and Luke helped the TTFC Scouts orient their maps, find bearings using landmarks, and move in the right direction.
It took a little less than four hours. We were tired, but it was a lot of FUN.
What we learned:
Get the most current map - We missed a cut-off trail and ended up with an extra couple miles of trail.
Bring more
water than you think you'll need - Plan on about 8 oz for every mile; more if it's hot or uphill.
