Tree worms/caterpillars?
A flowering crab tree in my yard has been infested with some kind of worm. My neighbor said they're called tent worms. They are black with two light stripes running its length. The worms are emerging from a large silky cocoon-like nest that has been weaved at the base of an upper branch.
Can anyone suggest what kind of insect builds such a nest, and how to eradicate the infestation?
We are renting a house and our landlord/property management are pretty thrifty.. I wonder if they'll pay to treat the tree. In case they won't.. is there any safe, non-chemical way to get rid of these? We've lived here for three years and this is the first time we've had this problem. . Thanks!
cut the bark and as little of the tree as possible from one side of the caccoon to the other end, just cutting out the caccoon and hopefully saving your tree. If there appears to be any further damage to your tree where the caccoon was, you will have to continue slicing deeper until you reach a good part of the tree with no damage.
Of course you can always buy pesticides to spray your tree down with, but this should be a last resort,
if you have any trees or shrubs nearby, check them out well also for these critters
