math help?!?
Matthew owns a tent company and is canvassing an A-Frame tent for a customer. The tent is 8 ft high and has a rectangular bottom of 12 ft wide by 10 ft long. The sides of the tent are 10 ft long. How much canvas does he need to make the tent?

An A-frame tent has the two roof sections, which are rectangles; the two end pieces, which are triangles; and the floor, which is another rectangle. (Although most tent floors are now made of polypropylene, not canvas. But I digress.)
OK, the floor is easy, 12x10 = 120 sq. ft. The ends are easy, 2 x 1/2 x 12 x 8 = 96 sq.ft. (Triangle area = 1/2*bh)
The length of the roof pieces would be 10 feet, but the width, or the slant side, is the hypotenuse of a right-angled triangle, with the other two sides being the height of 8 feet, and half the width of 12 feet, i.e., 6 feet. Aha! This makes a 3-4-5 (6-8-10) triangle, so the roof pieces are 10 feet wide, which of course makes them square. There are two of them, so that's 2 x 10 x 10 = 200 square feet.
The total would be 120 + 96 + 200 = Hey, you can do this part! But please work through all the steps above so you can solve similar problems. A diagram would be very helpful.
